2008 OUTREACH COMMITTEE REPORT
The Outreach Committee had another busy and exciting year helping our community and educating our congregation on issues of interest. December we were able to help several different groups have a better Christmas. Our congregation and friends of our congregation made it possible for us to provide 20 gift cards to the teenagers at the Florida Baptist Children’s home; help a family of 6 have a Christmas; and provide gifts for a party of the DHS Adult Day Care Center.
November found us providing 49 baskets to members of the Everglades Community Association for their Thanksgiving dinner. We also contributed money to help put on a Thanksgiving luncheon for the workers from the Day Laborer Worker’s Center. October we put on our 4th annual children’s Halloween Party at the Community Partnership for the Homeless in Homestead.
We provided two Justice Luncheons for our members. David & Carol Christensen provided us with information on the mission work they are doing in Ghana. The Center For Immokalee Workers (CIW) provided us a guest speaker to educate us on the conditions of the workers and the issues that they face.
Other accomplishments we were able to make as representatives of our church included presenting a signed petition to Burger King requesting them to listen to the needs of the CIW workers (tomato pickers); assist Habitat for Humanity with funds, lunches and our own manual labor; offer an Immokalee Immersion trip to experience a laborer’s workday and living conditions; fund coffee for Holy Joe’s café (helps the coffee growers and our fighting soldiers with ministerial counseling); Blanket Sunday; and support for the Florida Center for Theological Studies and Counseling Ministry of South Florida.
